Mr. Falana made the statement in an interview with Channels Television during the Politics Today program when Seun Okinbaloye asked him about his legal opinion on people who said that the election should petition should be concluded within 7 to 14 days.

Mr. Falana began by saying that with profound respect, some of his colleagues are causing confuseion because according to constitution, section 25 prescribed 180 days for dealing with election petition at the court of appeal and also if there is appeal, the law prescribed additional 60 days which up together it is going to 8 months. However, he said, “If people are saying we should go back to the drawing table, deploy and use technology properly, then we can amend the Constitution to allow election petition to be disposed off within 2 or 3 weeks.

“But where, as in this case, petitioners ( Peter Obi and Atiku) did not file their petition until 21 days after the election, then you can’t be talking of finishing the case in 7 days or 14 days.”
