He insisted that even though the National Working Committee (NWC) of the All Progressive Congress (APC), and the President-elect, Asiwaju Ahmed Bola Tinubu, have named Akpabio as their preferred candidate, the battle is far from over. He indirectly hinted that Akpabio’s chances are slim unless he resolves the feud he has with some elements in power.

Sambo said the feud between Akpabio and Lawan began when Akpabio was the Minister of Niger Delta Affairs. According to him, the former Akwa Ibom Governor had disrespected the Senate when he was Minister; and that, has purportedly caused a rift between him and Lawan. He said there is need for the APC and Akpabio to work to ensure that the former Akwa Ibom Governor becomes the Senate President.
