Chelsea’s misunderstood wonderchild Casadei has enormous potential for Pochettino

Chelsea’s forgotten starlet Cesare Casadei was the star of the show as Italy under-20s defeated Brazil 3-2 at the World Cup. Both he and Blues team-mate Andrey Santos captained their countries at the tournament in a game that incoming Chelsea boss Mauricio Pochettino will more than likely have been alerted to. With two of the most highly-anticipated Blues youngsters in action, Casadei was the star man as he scored twice from midfield to lead his side to victory in their opening group game. The 20-year-old got a brace in the first half and also claimed an assist as the Italians took a commanding 3-0 lead, before Brazil scored twice in the second 45 minutes.

The young Italian has spent the second half of the season loan at Reading, who were relegated from the Championship, having been signed from Inter Milan for an initial £15million amid Todd Boehly and co’s spending spree in their first window in charge at Stamford Bridge. Continue Reading>>>>

Casadei had not even made his debut for Inter but Chelsea were prepared to spend what could end up being £17.5m for the starlet, as they pre-empted the interest of three rival clubs according to Fabrizio Romano – a decision that Pochettino may thank the Blues hierarchy for next season.

At a time when Pochettino will be scouting the current Chelsea squad in search of the solution to their issues this season, one player that has been away from the club in Casadei may be the answer to their problems. The Blues’ midfield has been rotated all season, though Enzo Fernandez has been a mainstay since his British record transfer from Benfica in January.

Aside from the Argentine playmaker, the likes of Mateo Kovacic, N’Golo Kante, Conor Gallagher, Ruben Loftus-Cheek have been utilised but rarely shone together and many of their futures at Stamford Bridge remain in question. The club is anticipating a fire sale this summer to offset the £600m spent in the past two windows, as the likes of Kovacic, Gallagher and Loftus-Cheek could be put up for sale while Kante’s contract expires in just a few weeks.

With uncertainty in the midfield aside from Fernandez, Pochettino will be hoping some of the youth prospects such as Casadei can make an impact next season and will be impressed by his performance against Brazil.

The former Tottenham and Paris Saint-Germain head coach has a good track record of improving young players, something Boehly will have noted prior to making him their number one target.

Chelsea have invested a large sum of money in young talent over the past year with Casadei, Santos, David Datro Fofana, Malo Gusto, Carney Chukwuemeka alongside fellow youngsters Mykhaylo Mudryk, Benoit Badiashile, Noni Madueke and Wesley Fofana and will be hoping that Casadei can lead the next group of Blues stars under Pochettino.
