Salisu Yusuf and Nduka Ugbade are fired as coaches by the Nigerian Football Federation

William Saliba could be sticking with the No 12 shirt at Arsenal next season, despite widespread expectation that he will become the club’s new No 2. That’s if the 22-year-old defender, entering the final 12 months of his contract, is still at the Emirates Stadium beyond the summer transfer window. Continue Reading>>>>

Saliba played an important role in Arsenal’s Premier League title challenge in his first campaign as a member of the first team.

The France international made 33 appearances for Mikel Arteta’s side before ending the run-in sidelined through injury. Continue Reading>>>>

His formidable displays in the heart of the defence after three different loan spells away from the Emirates Stadium have made fans desperate to see him commit his long-term future.

And a recently leaked image could show what number Saliba will wear if he remains in north London.

A Reddit post showed Saliba handing a fan the 2023/24 Arsenal home kit in Cameroon, featuring the same design that several online sources have unofficially confirmed.

The shirt interestingly had the No 12 on the back, potentially hinting that the defensive general will keep it next season.

Saliba had already played this season before Hector Bellerin completed a permanent transfer to Barcelona, meaning he couldn’t have inherited the Spaniard’s No 2 shirt until this summer.

And with the number still available, it would be a surprise to see him opt for the No 12 instead, regardless of his positive individual campaign.

But many also noticed that ‘W. Saliba’ was put on the shirt, rather than ‘Saliba’, which he has worn throughout the 2022/23 campaign.

That detail may suggest that the image isn’t worth over-analysing, especially with contract talks seemingly at a standstill.

Arteta has settled concerns about Saliba’s future by insisting that Arsenal would find the time to address it.

Earlier in May, he said: “We want to keep our best talent. Especially the players that deserve some recognition.

“I think he has been incredible since he came back from his loan period, and we want to reward him, that is for sure. We will find the right moment to do that.

“Obviously, Edu and the board are on top of every negotiation regarding new contracts, and now we are doing everything we possibly can to do that at the right moment at the right time.

“The communication and the relationship are super. It is about timing, I think. Nothing else.”
