In an interview with AIT for the Kakaaki programme, Dahiru Majeed posed the rhetorical query when asked about Tinubu’s inaugural speech from yesterday, in which he eliminated the fuel subsidy and claimed that it favoured the wealthy over the poor.

In his opening statement, Dahiru Majeed claimed that anyone who supported President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Peter Obi, or Atiku Abubakar has no right to disagree with or criticise Tinubu for eliminating the fuel subsidy because those three candidates ran their campaigns on eliminating the subsidy, and they all received the most votes.Continue Reading>>>

He claimed he disagreed with Tinubu’s proposal to end fuel subsidies, particularly given that they disproportionately benefit the wealthy. Instead, he felt that the only thing that needed to be done was to stop corruption in the fuel subsidy system and to make sure that Nigeria’s refineries are operating so that we won’t have to resume exporting our fuel.

How can I accept that gasoline subsidies benefit the wealthy at the expense of the poor? The cost of fuel has increased from the N200 we paid the day before to 300 or 400 naira in some areas. Since I’m a poor man, that has affected me. I’ve never agreed with any argument in favour of eliminating fuel subsidies because energy is always subsidised in developed nations because it helps keep the economy stable.
